One of the most visually stunning demonstrations of talent and creativity within the architecture / engineering / construction communities will provide a much-needed source of food for the Orange County Food Bank, which services the more than 500,000 Orange County residents who are food insecure.

Part team-building exercise, part food drive, and part creative design outlet, Canstruction® OC takes an ordinary food drive and puts it on steroids! It is a design/build competition using canned and packaged foods as the building materials to create giant sculptures that showcase the ingenuity of the participants.

The premise is this: local architects (yup, PJHM is one of them), engineers, community groups, and students form teams that include at least one architect. They then design a structure, gather all the food items necessary to build it, then construct their visually and structurally stunning canned art structures (10’ x 10’ x 8’). The structures will be on display and open to the public on both sides of South Coast Plaza from September 1 – 23 in conjunction with the Festival of Children.

Judging occurs in categories such as Best Use of Labels, Structural Ingenuity, Best Meal, and Jury’s Favorite. Awards will be presented at a fundraising gala on Sunday, September 16, at SOCO (Southern Collection) in Costa Mesa. At the end of the event, all of the cans used to create the amazing structures will be donated to the Orange County Food Bank for distribution.

Canstruction® is the most unique food charity in the world! A foundation of the Society

for Design Administration (SDA), Canstruction® is a design/build competition that has

touched nearly 200 cities throughout North America and throughout the world. Each year

teams of architects and engineers compete to build unique sculptures made entirely out of canned

foods. Last year, similar Canstruction® events were held in over 100 cities and resulted

in a record over 2.5 million pounds of food being donated to aid in the fight against world hunger.
